Notes on money, markets and freedom

How economies move, and what it means for you.

What "the economy is slowing" actually means for your SIP

Headlines panic every quarter. Your SIP shouldn't.

Growth falling from 7% to 6% describes a year, revised twice. Your SIP buys units every month for twenty.

Nobody can tell you what markets do next quarter. History says the patient are paid more than the reactive. Slowdowns are when units are cheap.

Read macro news for understanding, not instructions. Understanding builds conviction. Instructions build anxiety.

The Answer Library

Every answer, kept forever, sorted by topic.

Getting startedHow much emergency fund do I actually need?▾

Six months of your essential expenses — rent, food, EMIs, school fees — kept in a savings account or liquid fund. Not investments, not gold: money you can reach in a day. If your job is unstable or you're the only earner, stretch it to nine months. Build this before any investing; it's what lets you invest without fear later.

SIP & investingSIP vs FD — what's actually better?▾

Wrong question — they do different jobs. An FD protects money you'll need in the next 1–3 years. A SIP into an index fund builds money you won't touch for 7+ years, riding through market ups and downs. FDs feel safe but often lose to inflation after tax; equity feels risky but historically wins over long periods. Use both, for different goals. Anyone who says one is always better is selling something.

TaxOld tax regime or new — how do I choose?▾

One honest rule: calculate, don't assume. If you genuinely use deductions — home loan interest, 80C investments, health insurance, HRA — the old regime can still win. If you don't, the new regime's lower rates usually win and your life gets simpler. Run both numbers on the official income-tax calculator each year; it takes ten minutes and the answer can flip as your salary changes.

FIREIs early retirement realistic on an Indian salary?▾

Yes — but honesty first: it depends far more on your savings rate than your salary. Someone earning ₹60,000 and investing ₹20,000 will reach freedom before someone earning ₹2 lakh and investing ₹15,000. The path is unglamorous: raise your savings rate every increment, automate SIPs, avoid lifestyle debt, and give it 15–20 patient years. Use the calculator above with your real numbers — that's your honest starting point.

Getting startedI have EMIs. Should I invest or clear debt first?▾

Look at the interest rate. Credit cards (30–40%) and personal loans (12–18%) — attack these first; no honest investment reliably beats those rates. A home loan at 8–9% is different: keep it, take the tax benefit, and invest alongside it. And whatever your debt, build one month of emergency money first, so a surprise doesn't push you into new debt.
